Home Office Cabinets and Built-Ins in Atlanta

A built-in office is the cheapest piece of joinery in a house to get right and the easiest to get wrong, because most of it is standard cabinetry and one part of it is not. The desk height is the part that is not.

Rest Cabinetry works from 6115 Jimmy Carter Blvd, Suite E, Norcross, GA 30071, Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 17:00. Boxes are all-plywood throughout - a strict no-particleboard policy - with a 12-month limited warranty on cabinets, hinges and drawer glides. Collect the same day in Norcross or have the order delivered in 7 to 10 business days across metro Atlanta.

A desk wall is base cabinets and shelves

Almost every built-in desk is the same construction: a run of base cabinets with a counter across them, drawer bases where files and stationery go, and shelving or wall cabinets above.

The cabinets are stock. The shelving between and above them is usually custom, because the spans and the reveals have to suit the wall rather than a catalogue width. Glass door cabinets are worth considering for the upper run - an office is one of the few rooms where what is on the shelf is meant to be seen.

Desk height is not counter height

A kitchen counter is 36 inches. A desk is 29 to 30. If a desk run is built at counter height - which happens when it is ordered as if it were a kitchen - it is unusable for typing and no chair fixes it.

The usual solution is a lower counter across the desk section and full height either side for storage, which also gives the wall some rhythm rather than one flat run. Knee space needs about 24 inches clear width and nothing behind it, so the base cabinet arrangement has to leave a gap rather than filling the wall.

Cable management, decided early

The two things that ruin a built-in desk are both electrical. There is never an outlet where the desk ends up, and there is no route for cables from the floor box to the desktop.

Both are cheap to solve before the cabinets go in and expensive afterwards. Decide where the outlets and the cable pass-through go while the wall is still open, and have the counter drilled before it is templated rather than after it is fitted.

Frequently asked questions

What height should a built-in desk be?

29 to 30 inches, not the 36 inches of a kitchen counter. A desk built at counter height cannot be typed at comfortably and no chair corrects it.

Can kitchen cabinets be used for a home office?

The base and wall cabinets, yes - they are the same all-plywood boxes. The shelving and the desk counter are usually custom, because spans and heights have to suit the wall.

How much knee space does a built-in desk need?

About 24 inches of clear width with nothing behind it. That means leaving a gap in the base run rather than filling the whole wall with cabinets.

Do you do the shelving as well as the cabinets?

Shelving between and above the cabinets is custom work. Customers supply room measurements, we survey the space, and the design is modelled in 3D before anything is built.

Do you deliver across metro Atlanta?

Yes - 7 to 10 business days anywhere on the delivery route, or same-day collection at 6115 Jimmy Carter Blvd, Suite E, Norcross, GA 30071. Service areas lists every city.
