Finish is the word doing the most work and the least explaining in a cabinet catalogue. Paint, stain, matt and gloss are not shades of the same thing - they behave differently under light, under a cloth, and over ten years.
An opaque coat, so the grain of the substrate does not show. That is the point: a painted door is one even colour, which is what makes white, grey, navy and green cabinets possible at all.
What it tolerates: wiping, repeatedly. What it shows: chips at an edge that has been knocked, and a slight shift in tone after years of direct sunlight on one door of a run - which is one reason to buy a whole kitchen in one order rather than adding to it later.
A stain is transparent, so the grain shows through and no two doors are identical. That variation is the material being honest rather than a defect, and it is why wood finishes do not acquire a date stamp the way a specific paint colour can.
Stain also hides daily use better than any pale paint, because grain interrupts a mark before the eye reads it. A woodgrain in a dark tone - a charcoal with visible grain - keeps the depth of a dark finish while catching light rather than swallowing it.
Matt absorbs light and shows almost no reflection, which is what reads as modern. It also shows fingerprints and grease sooner than a satin finish, most of all around handles and beside the range. The European collection is matt and handleless.
High gloss does the opposite - it reflects the room, which makes a small kitchen feel larger and makes every smear visible. The Escada collection is the gloss one.
