This is the first real decision in a kitchen and the one most people make last. It is not a question of taste alone: the two doors behave differently in the same room, under the same light, with the same counter.
A shaker door is five pieces - four rails around a flat centre panel - and where the panel meets the frame there is a step that throws a shadow. A flat panel door has no step and no shadow.
That single line changes three things. It gives the door depth, so a pale shaker reads as joinery where a pale slab reads as a surface. It hides an uneven reveal, because the eye reads the frame rather than the gap. And it collects grease, because a step is somewhere for grease to sit.
Shaker is the neutral choice. It sits in a 1920s bungalow and in a new build, which is why it has been in production for over a century. If the room has trim, panelled doors or any traditional detail, shaker agrees with it.
Flat panel is the modern choice and the better one in a small kitchen: with no lines to stop on, the eye runs the length of the wall and the room reads larger. It also wants a better installation, because every gap is a straight line the length of the run.
| Shaker | Flat panel | |
|---|---|---|
| Reads as | traditional to transitional | modern |
| Small room | fine | better |
| Hides install error | yes, in the frame lines | no |
| Cleaning | step collects grease near the range | wipes flat |
| Dates | slowly | slowly, but the hardware dates |
Both are stocked here across nine collections. Shaker covers 24 finishes; flat panel and raised panel are the other two directions.
Atlanta kitchen cabinets covers the ordering process end to end and Atlanta cabinetry the same work in other rooms. Design consultation models the layout in 3D first; installation and assembly are available for a fee. Shop cabinets lists all nine collections.
Shaker, by a wide margin - it is the most ordered door here and has been in production for over a century. Flat panel is growing and is the stronger choice in a modern or small room.
Flat panel. The step where a shaker panel meets its frame collects grease, and it shows first beside the range.
It rarely reads as deliberate. A two-tone kitchen works better as one door profile in two colours than as two profiles.
Shaker. The frame lines give the eye something to read instead of the gap. On a slab run every reveal is a straight line the length of the kitchen.
