Most people choose a cabinet by its door and never look inside the box until the kitchen is installed. Shaker Gray-NATURAL INTERIOR puts the inside in its name: the outside is a mid-tone gray, and the inside of the box is natural wood veneer under a UV coat rather than gray paint. That is worth understanding before you choose, because it is the part of the cabinet you will look into every day.
The outside of the box matches the door, in gray. Open any door and the inside is wood: a natural veneer finished with a UV-cured clear coat. The drawers are solid wood dovetail boxes. The supplier notes one honest caveat: veneer is a natural material, so the interior tone can vary with material supply, and two cabinets may not be exactly the same shade inside.
The interior is the surface that takes the work. Plates slide across the shelves, pans knock the sides, and the sink base sees water. A UV coat is a hard, clear finish cured under ultraviolet light, which makes the inside wipe clean, and a light wood interior is easier to see into than a painted gray one when you are looking for something at the back of a base cabinet.
It also changes how the kitchen looks with the doors open. Gray outside and warm wood inside is a quiet two-tone of its own, the same effect a wood island under painted cabinets gives a whole room, and it shows most behind glass-door uppers, where the interior is on display.
Shaker Gray is a mid-tone gray without a strong lean warm or cool, which is why it serves as the reference point in gray Shaker or white Shaker. Against a warm floor, test it first: cool gray above red-toned oak is the combination most likely to fight, as getting a gray undertone right explains. The door is five-piece, with solid wood stiles around a recessed plywood centre panel, at full overlay. The box is 1/2" solid plywood. Drawers are 5/8" solid wood dovetail boxes with 1/2" plywood bottoms behind five-piece drawer heads, on full-extension soft-close undermount glides, and the hinges are soft-close and six-way adjustable.
